Working With Elephants
At Kazi Ya Tembo (Swahili for “Elephant Work”), we’re on the ground in Tanzania, dedicated to a vital mission: fostering a future where humans and elephants can thrive side-by-side. Our work directly addresses the escalating challenge of Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC), where elephants seeking food from farms clash with communities protecting their livelihoods.
Imagine the tension in a farmer’s field under the cover of night. Elephants, silently emerging from protected areas, can decimate a season’s crops in hours, causing immense hardship and sparking dangerous encounters. These conflicts threaten not only human lives and livelihoods but also the very survival of these magnificent elephants. It’s a complex problem that demands innovative, on-the-ground solutions.
We tackle Human-Elephant Conflict head-on with a proactive and non-confrontational approach:

Equipped with thermal cameras, our drones allow rangers to see elephants in complete darkness. The subtle, bee-like sound of the drone gently guides elephants away from farms, back towards safe zones, without causing panic or harm.

Our rangers are strategically positioned in conflict hotspots, ready to deploy quickly and maintain gentle pressure, ensuring elephants are moved far enough away to prevent their immediate return.

We empower local rangers and communities with the skills and knowledge needed to manage human-elephant interactions safely and effectively.

We continuously monitor elephant movements and conflict incidents, allowing us to adapt our strategies and improve our effectiveness.
This combined approach significantly reduces crop raids, protects human lives, and safeguards elephant populations.
